Saving the world is a good thing

Don’t get me wrong. Saving the world is a good thing. And it’s laudable that many of the G8 protestors want to do it. There are no more worthy causes than eradicating disease, hunger and despotism. This is not easy. And ultimately these causes are attainable. But here’s a hint: It takes a lot more to make real change than wearing body paint, waving placards and sloganeering. Yes, it even requires more than dropping your pants and mooning The Gap. Ditto for the numbskulls in the Revolutionary Knitting Circle, which stationed itself in downtown Calgary to hold a global knit-in to protest the G8. Good grief. A trained chimpanzee could do these things.

It is much more difficult to get an education and become respected for your intellect and hard work. It takes time and sacrifice to earn the respect of people who will entrust you to change the world. Institutions, governments and international agencies are typically run by people who have worked tirelessly, patiently and with great persistence.

Whether it’s working in humanitarian assistance or being elected to office, those who truly want to change our world do much more than show up for protests.
